From Idea to Reality; A WINNERS Choice!!!
Our goal as a promotional organization and race team for kids has been steadily gaining momentum since 2001. Our results on and off the track has been nothing short of fantastic. In our first full year on the circuit we made the trip to Indianapolis for the Amateur Dirt Track Nationals and brought three youngsters we have been working with. There were two nine year olds and one 10 year old. Our expectations were to place in the top five. These youngsters exceeded all expectations by placing 1 st and 2 nd in the premier 65cc modified class and 3 rd overall in the 85cc modified class. These youngsters performed incredibly, had a bunch of fun and made new friends from all over the country.
In addition to our outstanding results in the US flat tracking we also coordinated races with the premier promoter in Canada Mr. Buddy Ford. We brought several young riders to Montreal and Quebec to race on their beautiful prepared half mile and mile tracks where our riders continued to perform making it on the podium for a 1 st and 2 nd while putting on a great show for the fans as well. Dirt track racing in Canada draws very good size crowds especially since amateur racing is combined with the Canadian pro series. Several thousand fans show up for these events and a highlight of the evening is the future stars of the sport, the kids program.
Mid-2001 Coolskunk Promotions took on the task of creating a cross training program where the same dirt track youngsters would take their learned skills of sliding a motorcycle at speed and apply those techniques to 50cc road race bikes on closed circuit go-kart tracks. The intent is to start these athletes early in their introduction to motorcycle racing the style, feel and new wave skills necessary to advance toward road racing opportunities. Our youth have had limited opportunities of riding organized road race competitions, there are no organized cross-training programs and up to today riders had to be 14 years old to compete on tracks like Loudon speedway. Now that the age has dropped at many tracks to 12 years old on a 125GP machine, you will soon see more crossovers from the Dirttrack world. One interesting point is the fact that many of the top factory road race athletes are all expert dirt track racers.
To fully understand the dynamics between dirt track racing and road racing, Coolskunk Promotions added to our program professional training using the services of American Super-Camp. Many of our most dedicated athletes train on average two times a year, once in spring and once in the fall. These programs provide two intensive days of race training coordinated by Danny Walker, former 250 GP racer and Chris Carr, seven time and current AMA Grand National Dirt Track Champion. The training camps use American Super-Camp supplied XR 100’s, the trainer of choice of top professionals worldwide. This camp is like no other! The drills, the techniques, their willingness to focus on kid’s development and their continued attention to fun have no equal. Even during the race season our team practices with their own XR 100’s to continue to hone the skills they learned at camp.
Today Coolskunk KyDs Racing Team has accumulated over 70 national and regional titles including 11 AMA Grand Championships. Our program has helped develop over 27 riders during their early career stages in just 6 seasons and we continue to grow and expand. We are now concentrating efforts to better understand how to translate our success in dirt track to pavement sports such as Road Racing and SuperMoto. We continue to cultivate new talent using the same success formula. We even updated our program to include training with Freddy Spencer for advanced road racing techniques .
It is the belief of the founder that the future stars of motor racing can advance providing continued attention to life values and training techniques are introduced at an early age. Our organization recognizes how the preparation of goals, the promotion of family spirit and the bonding of life learning values created from coordinated team effort help shape individuals. It not only generates a solid riding backdrop from which to expand, it creates and reinforces character, integrity and excellence, the values of true champions. While our efforts may or may not produce the next world champions, you can bet each young participant will grow in ways that will continue to shape their future, the future of our sport and the future of those around them.
